Reading, The Landing of the Pilgrims by James Dougherty, I came across this sentence about the Mayflower: "Day after day the staunch little ship held on—a speck in the violence of wind and water."  And yet, by the first winter in the settlement, fourteen of the eighteen wives had died.

timber wears 
in the heave-ho of life 
shrouds laid out
